It seems that in spite of the mass migration of people to technology when it comes to leisure activities, there is a small but growing number of people who still derive great satisfaction from going one on one when it comes to competitive hobbies and pastimes; these pastimes take many forms but one that has been with us commercially since the late fifties is slotcar racing. Once the technology had arrived the general public did the rest.

Image

So it has been now for this last fifty years or so, through boom and bust, there has always been an ardent core of racers who, come fair weather or foul, manage to take themselves away to a place of indulgence and participate in their chosen hobby with like minds. Pitting like against like they can enjoy competition against strangers and friends alike.

Image

There are now several venues in South East Queensland where the slotista can exercise his skills against good competition; the latest arrival being Poppa’s Pitstop Slotcars at Hillcrest. Here you can indulge yourself in a very professionally constructed track with a state of the art race management system.

Image

The track is tucked away in a unit in Hillcrest close to the Browns Plains commercial precinct, down near Motorama; take the driveway along-side St Vinnie’s and it’s just on the right.

Image

The track is owned and operated by long time enthusiast Stephen Brown who has put together a great little venue for the amateur and hardened racer alike. The track was originally located in Dandenong in Victoria and Stephen has purchased it and had it transported all the way here for our enjoyment

Image

As the pictures show, the track is a very well constructed six lane track, being a gloss painted board construction with ‘magnabraid’ conductor rails either side of a deep slot. The race management system is the latest product from local Garry Johnson and the overall serves well as a race venue and a hire track too.

Image

The track is technically a figure of eight, making all lanes exactly the same length; that’s the easy bit! The track designers opted to ‘plait’ one of the straights! Not a big deal when driving some of the slower models, but a definite challenge if you are into Scaleautos or Plafits. This part should be treated with respect if you don’t want to have to recover your model from under the track!

Image

Lap length is about 39 metres and the track is a fast and sweeping layout. There is plenty of opportunity to get the most out of faster models such has the specialist metal chassis cars as well as still retaining enough enjoyment from your ‘off the shelf’ ready to race 1/24th and 1/32nd models like Scalextric, Fly, Ninco , SCX , Carrera etc.

Image

The track has plenty of grip and when I tried it out with a standard 1/32 RTR, the rubber tyres hooked up well. The magnetic effect of the magnabraid is quite mild (probably a bit less than the Carrera stainless track) and this seems less when negotiating the fast sweepers. The only critical observation I would make is that it is a large track mostly at one level; when your model reaches the extremities, and you are a short a**e like me, it can be difficult to keep track of the corners furthest from you. Next time I will take something to stand on!

Image

If you are into ‘head to head’ racing there is competition on Tuesday evenings for the racer, and most afternoons the track is for hire either by the lane or for parties and groups; Stephen will organise the event for you. Use of the track can also include hire of controllers if you need them, or you can take your own. Cars are also for hire, again, if you don’t have any.

Image

There is also a rest room if you need to getaway from things for a bit; and as well as tea and coffee facilities there are snack and drink vending machines

So if you want to turn up just for a test and tune or a few hot laps; or you want to dive into the thick of it against others, contact Stephen on the following details:

Hi Chris,

At this stage he is open to anyone who wants to organise an event there. As such there is no scheduled racing for 1/32 RTR models. There are already some of the Plafit guys racing on a Tuesday evening.

Re: Poppa's Pitstop Slotcars - New home for the track

Postby wixwacing » Tue 03 Feb, 2015 5:58 pm

A good piece of news in a litany of good track closures is the revival of the ex Mobile Raceway/Poppa's pitstop six lane track. The track now resides at Andrews street in Wynnum and the new owner Tony Rookas has percivered against the odds and now has the track functioning once again.

Originally purchased from previous owner Steve Brown, the track never functioned properly and the computer system was persistent in being uncooperative. After several false starts Tony and friend Perry contacted me to see if I could help. A provisional reccie four or five weeks ago showed the computer to be misbehaving and failing to boot up to the race program. The computer was taken to a repair shop where it was pronounced dead on arrival!!

When working, the old race management system was considered too unweildy for the average user and also did not have any support from the builders. After several inquiries it was decided to scrap the old computer and the race program and install the popular Canadian Trackmate system. After several inquiries with the Trackmate program writers a copy of the latest system and hardware is on its way to Aus as we speak. While waiting we have converted the drivers stations to standard Queensland round earth plugs and have stripped the old hardware to make way for the new.

The good news is that the track is now open for business and if you want to have fun running your latest acquisitions then a short phone call should see you right. Unfortunately it will be a couple of weeks yet before we can do club racing but track / lane hire is available imediately on a guestimation basis. Provisionally the opening hours are as follows,

Mon to Friday 4.00 pm onwards
Sat and Sun 10.30 am onwards by appointment

110 Andrews Street Wynnum

Contact Tony on 0411 173714

The intention is to get the venue as a slotracing centre with separate classes and makes on different nights with Saturday free for other slotracing engagements. So if you have been waiting for the good news, call Tony on the number above or call or email me directly on 07 3822 7003 or pwix@yahoo.com for more information.

Postby racingchrisd » Wed 17 Jun, 2015 8:09 pm

I have just purchased a Scalextric Dodge Charger Daytona C3423 and after removing, ALL the body securing screws, I still CANNOT remove the body, it seems like the nose cone is stopping the body lifting off? any ideas?
