Neil's track 1 - Adelaide

Post by wixwacing »

Concluding my trip to Adelaide was a trip to southside racer Neil’s. Neil lives just north of McLaren Vale which is a thirty minute or so drive south from Adelaide. On the way we stopped over at the Hobby Habit hobby centre at Melrose Park. A veritable Mecca for all things hobby. The shop covers 5000 square meters with a large amount of this being the indoor R/C racing centre with two tracks, one a circuit racing set up and the other, more or less a dirt track with humps, leaps and banked corners.

On reaching Neil’s he treated us to some fish and chips and the odd drink, which hit the spot, before we moved on to his race room. The race room is another man cave in the back garden, full of the delights celebrating the evolution of the slotcar! Neill built the shed some years back and must have devoted a considerable amount of time filling it. And inside it is easy to see what he filled it with.

On entering the shed the slotcar senses are bombarded with slotcar paraphernalia from stuff I remember as a young boy up to the latest track hardware for serious racing. Classic models and slotracers as well as a huge store of what can only be spares and parts for every model under the sun. I don’t think there is a brand he doesn’t have represented in some way. Like Keith he has generously landscaped his tracks and there are scenarios dotted behind every tree and building if you know where to look.

Again, population of the smaller track has given it that live feeling. Too often we race on featureless, un-landscaped tracks and whereas the racing can be good I always think it’s a bit clinical. No fear of that at Neil’s. There are four tracks in all, but the two smaller tracks are seldom used apart from holding boxes of who knows what for future use. No doubt though that the tracks could be put in to action at a moments notice.

The smaller track has been slotted into a part of the room sandwiched between the workshop and the side of the building. It has a good straight on it and a jink on the return run which catches out the unawares for the first several minutes, but once mastered proves to be a novel feature. The track is a figure eight giving all lanes the same length and for the short while we raced on it I could see that it could level the gap between motor sizes and a well prepared model could easily hold its own against some of the quicker offerings.

When I'm not racing slotcars,
I'm out in the back yard, burning food!!

When I win, it's because of my talent, not my car or my controller!
