I got 5' of 1" solid round rod for $5.00 (USA) - scrapyards are great places for materials. I got a 3' x 6" brass plate for $8.00. I go once every two weeks. I throw metal in the back of the truck then use the money from the scrap to buy gas/petrol and metal. Materials don't have to be expensive.

Hey Dan,
Thats a pretty good place to find useful stuff. Nothing wrong with a bit of recycling.

The lathe is the trick. TAIG which is PETOL in UK sells them piece by piece. The motor is the least necessary part that costs a fair amount of money. Watch for someone throwing away a treadmill as they have DC motors that are better than AC. The motor has more torque. You just strip out the motor, AC to DC converter and the electronics which control the speed. I have three in my basement.

The basic lathe package gives you most of what you need.
