Re: Home made files.

Or you guys make so much noise the next house opens up and we build an outbuilding (not outhouse) that spans the back of the three properties. I have a local friend, Dyno Tom, with which I discussed this very thing - 20' by 60' slot emporium and workshop.

Re: Making gears

Even without making a gear, I learned a lot on little things. If we don't make the tool, at least we know what to buy. It would take 30-40 gears to pay for the cutter.

Do tools pay for themselves?

Buy tools and use them. My grandpa taught me that. A tool that sets there is just a shelf queen that depreciates in value. Tools that are used do pay for themselves either by saving or selling. My lathe, spindle sander, and mill are approaching the 25% mark in paying for self. Now if we factor in fu...

Lighten Up -- A Gear/Wheel

I have rules: 1) Try to make it before buying it. 2) Make it using either existing stuff (tools and materials) or make it as cheaply as possible. 3) Buy tools if and when you have the money before you buy slot cars. I do have a bunch of tools. A while back I got a rotary table (http://www.harborfrei...

Re: 5' of Aluminium

The lathe is the trick. TAIG which is PETOL in UK sells them piece by piece. The motor is the least necessary part that costs a fair amount of money. Watch for someone throwing away a treadmill as they have DC motors that are better than AC. The motor has more torque. You just strip out the motor, A...

5' of Aluminium

I got 5' of 1" solid round rod for $5.00 (USA) - scrapyards are great places for materials. I got a 3' x 6" brass plate for $8.00. I go once every two weeks. I throw metal in the back of the truck then use the money from the scrap to buy gas/petrol and metal. Materials don't have to be exp...

Re: New classic Renault from Avant Slot

The problem with Avant Slot is usually the chassis drags on banking. Every one (4) I have owned does this.
